Lake Texoma & Denison: A Local's Guide to the Good Stuff

Lake Texoma is the reason most people find their way to Denison. It's one of the largest reservoirs in the country, spread across the Texas–Oklahoma line on the Red River, and it pulls in somewhere around six million visitors a year — fishermen, boaters, campers, and families who just want a big piece of water and some quiet around it. Here's how we'd spend the time if we were visiting.

Fishing for stripers. Texoma is famous for striped bass — it's often billed as the Striped Bass Capital of the World — and unlike a lot of lakes, the stripers reproduce naturally here. If you've never fished it, a half-day with one of the local guides who launch from the marinas around the lake is the fastest way to learn it, and near-limits are common in season. Catfish, crappie, and sand bass round things out. No boat of your own? The state park shoreline and the coves fish fine, and our guests warm up on the stocked pond at the cabins before they ever hit the big water.

Eisenhower State Park. On the lake's south shore, just outside Denison, Eisenhower State Park is the easy lake day: a swimming beach, boat ramps, hiking trails along the bluffs, and picnic spots under the trees. It's named for President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was born right here in Denison — which brings us to downtown.

Downtown Denison. Main Street is a genuine old Texas main street — local restaurants, coffee shops, antique stores, and boutiques in historic buildings, with live music on the right nights. Two blocks off Main, the Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site preserves the house where Ike was born in 1890. It's a short visit and worth it. If you're staying with us, downtown is 2 miles from the tiny cabins, so dinner in town is never a production.

Choctaw Casino & Resort. About 18 miles north of the cabins in Durant, Oklahoma, Choctaw is one of the largest casinos in the country — gaming floors, a concert venue, restaurants, and a resort pool setup if your lake trip needs a night of bright lights. Plenty of our guests split the difference: quiet cabin, loud evening, home by midnight.

Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge. On the lake's western shore near Sherman, Hagerman is the trip for bird people — thousands of acres of wetlands and habitat where migratory birds stack up in the fall and winter, snow geese included. There's a self-guided auto tour and walking trails, and it's one of the prettiest drives in the county.

Waterloo Lake. Denison's own little lake, a few minutes from downtown — a local park with fishing, picnic areas, and an easy trail around the water. It's where Denison folks go when they want an hour outdoors without making a day of it.

Where to stay. Shepherd Hill Retreats is built for exactly this trip. Our six Texas Tiny Cabins sit on 40 acres 8 miles from Lake Texoma and 2 miles from downtown Denison — close to everything, quiet at night, with a stocked fishing pond and kayaks on the property for the hours you don't spend on the big lake. The OK View houses (the Barndominium, the Cabin, the Tiny Home on Wheels, and the Red Barn) sit on acreage on the Denison side with their own pond and dock. And if you want to wake up on the water itself, the Lake House sits on the Texoma shoreline near Eisenhower State Park. Every property books direct at shepherdhillretreats.com — no platform fees, and a local family on the other end of the phone at (903) 267-5495.
